Holter and Event Monitoring

Holter and event monitors are used when symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, or fainting occur infrequently, and a regular heart test, such as an EKG or ECG, is normal. The monitors record the electrical activity of your heart over time.

What Are Holter and Event Monitors?

Holter and event monitors are small, portable devices you wear on your body to record your heart’s electrical activity over a longer period.

  • A Holter monitor records continuously for 24–48 hours.
  • An event monitor is worn for longer and activated by the patient when symptoms occur.

Why Are They Used?

Holter and event monitors are used to diagnose:

  • Intermittent arrhythmias
  • Causes of fainting or dizziness
  • Irregular heartbeats not seen on EKG
  • Effectiveness of heart medications

Why choose Holter and Event Monitoring?

  • Detects symptoms that come and go
  • Easy to wear during normal daily activities
  • Non-invasive and painless
  • Leads to a more accurate diagnosis of elusive heart problems

What to Expect

You will wear the device on your chest or around your belt. The patient records symptoms in a diary or presses a button during an episode (event monitor). After the monitoring period, the monitor is returned to your doctor, who will interpret the data and determine the cause of your symptoms.
