Transesophageal Echocardiogram

A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is a particular ultrasound test that provides detailed images of your heart by placing a probe down your esophagus, offering a closer and clearer view than traditional echocardiograms.

What Is a TEE?

During the TEE procedure, a thin, flexible probe is inserted through your throat and esophagus while you are under sedation. The position allows the ultrasound to capture high-resolution images of your heart’s structures and function.

Why Is It Done?

TEE is used to evaluate:

  • Heart valves and chambers
  • Blood clots or masses inside the heart
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Infection or inflammation of the heart lining
  • Sources of stroke or embolism

Benefits of TEE

  • Clear, detailed images
  • Better detection of abnormalities than surface ultrasound
  • Helps guide treatment decisions
  • Minimally invasive with short recovery

What to Expect

  • Sedation to keep you comfortable
  • Probe inserted through the mouth into the esophagus
  • The test lasts about 20-30 minutes
  • Mild throat soreness after the procedure
