Chronic vein abnormalities are found in 50 percent of the population. More than 30 million people suffer from venous disease, but less than 10 percent seek treatment. Chronic venous insufficiency is a common disorder that affects the veins of the legs. These veins carry blood from the legs back to the heart. If the valves within the veins fail to work properly, blood can flow backwards in the veins and pool in the legs. These veins than can become distended and become varicose veins.

Varicose veins are distorted, dilated veins near the surface of the skin that may look like a cord. Most commonly in the legs and ankles. They may not be serious initially but can lead to serious problems in the future.

Also known as telangiectasias, are small thin blood vessel beneath the skin. Spider veins are typically seen on the surface of legs, that look like a spider web. Though mostly cosmetic these veins can be indicative of severe disease in the future. Many patients are bothered by the appearance of these veins; however, they are easily treated via minimally invasive technique, and offer beautiful results in the long run. Learn More

May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is an anatomically and pathologically variable condition leading to venous outflow obstruction as a result of external venous compression. With partial venous obstruction, the condition can be asymptomatic, but progression with symptoms related to chronic venous hypertension or venous occlusion can occur, with or without venous thrombosis. Radiofrequency ablation
Minimally invasive treatment for varicose veins. Ablation means the doctor uses heat to form a scar in the vein which closes the vein. The doctor inserts a special catheter into the diseased vein. This wire heats up the vein and seals it from the inside. The vein stays in place, but it no longer carries blood. These procedures involve no surgery and can be done with very little anesthesia. They can be done in our office. You can walk out of the office the same day with minimal recovery time.
After the procedure you will wear compression stockings for 1 week or more and follow up with an ultrasound to confirm the vein is closed.
- The risk of any complications are very low in the hands of an expert physician
- Feelings of burning, pain, or prickling after recovery, from nerve damage (less likely than after vein stripping surgery).
- Small or large blood clotting in the vein or a deep vein (less likely than after vein stripping surgery).
Microphlebectomy
Technique to remove varicose vein. This procedure requires several tiny cuts (incisions) in the skin through which the varicosed vein is removed. Stitches usually are not required. It can be performed in our office with local anesthesia and minimal discomfort. Microphlebectomy might be done along with another treatment for varicose veins, including radiofrequency treatment.
- Phlebectomy usually does not lead to complications. Possible complications include short-term skin color change, infection, pain, and tiny red spider veins.
What happens to the blood flow in my legs if my veins are removed?
- Varicose veins become non-functional, essentially not serving the purpose they did when they were healthy. The circulation travels through the healthy veins back to the heart.
Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy
The doctor injects a chemical or glue into the diseased vein with the help of a duplex ultrasound that causes it to collapse on itself. The vein stays in place, but it no longer carries blood. Sclerotherapy or glue can be done in our office with local anesthesia. This treatment targets difficult spider veins and smaller refractory varicose veins which are refractory to treatment.
- Minimal recovery period, walk out of the office after treatment.
